Stripe has reportedly acquired tech firm OpenRouter for a price five times higher than what investors paid for it in May.

According to information from news agency Bloomberg, Stripe is putting $7 billion on the table, whereas investors still valued it at $1.3 billion in May.

OpenRouter is a company that acts as a kind of toll gate in the world of AI-model users. Simply put, a user can indicate which task they want to have carried out by which model. By way of comparison: you transport goods with a trailer, not with a Bugatti. OpenRouter selects the right vehicles for the tasks. It provides the API and routing layer for developers.

The usefulness of such a system is twofold. Developers and other techies only need to integrate a single API into their software in order to be able to work with multiple models. Business rules determine which model is allowed to do what, and when. A second motive is more one for the CFO. A smart traffic controller helps prevent bill shocks.

In a sense, Stripe is also a traffic controller, but for payment systems. The company enables businesses to accept payments and manage cash flows from multiple payment platforms. It is mainly used in webshops, apps, SaaS services and online marketplaces.

The acquisition bring in-house a new product that is conceptually similar in how it operates to what they already do – but then for AI models. In addition, Stripe has a product for measuring and pricing LLM usage. On that point, OpenRouter adds more depth to the range.

None of the parties involved has confirmed the acquisition.

Stripe, together with OpenAI, is one of the founders of the Agentic Commerce Protocol. This is a system that is intended to facilitate payment flows in transactional AI environments. E-commerce in AI spheres can only exist if there are standards for processing payments. ACP is one of them.
