O2’s Games Arcade offers a commercial Java games service, bringing pictures, colour, sound and an arcade feel to mobile gaming.

The O2 Games Arcade allows O2 customers with Java-enabled handsets to download a variety of games on their mobile phones.

Launch titles include including Oilrig, Highway Racer, Forbidden Jungle, Pinball — The Castle and Towers. New games will be added each month.

Customers can download the games for EUR2.50 per game, with an extra cost for the time spent downloading it — this is expected to be no more than EUR1 in most cases. After that, the games are yours to play when and as often as you like.

According to O2, 34% of 16 to 19 year olds and 26 percent of 20 to 24 year olds regularly play embedded mobile phone games such as Snake. By 2005, Forrester Research believes 45% of Europe’s mobile subscribers in Europe will pay to play games on their mobile regularly. Ovum forecasts that global spending on mobile games will total EUR4.4 billion by 2006.

O2 is working with game suppliers and developers such as Motorola, THQ and Mr. Goodliving.
