On June 20th, Mary Hanafin, Minister of State at the Department of An Taoiseach, launched the Storytelling in the Liberties website at the Digital Hub technology innovation centre and presented certificates to over forty children to mark the completion of the first phase of the project. The website hosts 210 stories all produced by school children from the Liberties area in central Dublin. The Storytelling in the Liberties project commenced in ten primary schools and three post-primary schools in the area in November 2002.
The project was designed to develop and enhance ‘The Liberties’ oral tradition of storytelling through digital media. Storytelling in the Liberties explores new applications and integration of digital media into education. An evaluation programme is currently being developed by The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) with possible plans to replicate this initiative in other localities around Ireland. www.thedigitalhub.com/storytelling
