Reader Rabbit triple Pack

Life

1 April 2005

Once again, Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion have returned to help your children improve their maths and reading skills. The triple pack contains Reader Rabbit Maths, Reader Rabbit Reading and Reader Rabbit Year 2. All the programs are aimed at six-to eight-year-olds.

Reader Rabbit Maths sees Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion trapped on Pirate Island. The idea is to help the pair rebuild their boat, escape the pirates and compete in the boat race. Children can take part in various games that build their math skills almost without them realising. Win boat parts by playing the pizza game: put the right pizza slices together and win a part for your ship. More advanced skills, such as inequalities and division, are explored in a game that allows children to dunk the pirates. Measuring area and length is sneakily covered in a section that allows children to make sails for their ship. Other mathematical concepts covered include counting money, estimating and telling time.

In Reader Rabbit reading, children go on a car journey with reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion. To progress through each stage, all the tasks must be completed. These range from reading the two books on each screen to completing tasks like making rhymes by changing letters and matching up the rhyming words.

The best thing about this program is that almost everything on the screen is interactive. This will hold the attention of most children. At one part of the game, children have to help Reader Rabbit and friends cross a rickety bridge that has definitely seen better days. To fill in the missing boards and get the characters safely to the other side of the ravine, children must guess the correct words. A wrong answer can lead to a wrong step, which could make for a few hairy moments for all concerned.

The final piece of software in the pack, Reader Rabbit Year 2, covers everything from creative writing and reading comprehension to science and ecology. With reader Rabbit trapped in the Dragon’s Castle, it’s up to Sam to save him by solving the castle’s mysteries. The software covers ‘carry-over’ addition, complex vowels, and nouns, verbs and adjectives, helping children to sharpen their skills. Use the Castle’s Enchanted E-mail to help children record their journey through the castle, in messages from Sam to Reader Rabbit.
