Network monitoring for small and medium businesses no longer requires expensive, enterprise-class software tools. Mutiny’s alert and monitoring software is supplied pre-loaded on a dedicated device — Toshiba’s Magnia SG20 or Z310 compact server appliance.

The Toshiba Network Monitor with Mutiny Onboard is designed to be used by non-technical staff; it is simple to use and totally Web managed.

The ‘plug and ping’ unit provides real-time graphical display and reporting of network hardware and application status. It allows organisations to make their networks more reliable, with better fault management and less downtime.




Users are warned of any potential disruptions or system failure on the network. The appliance also stores a range of historical data that can be later reviewed and analysed.

According to Brian McBride of Data Edge, this is a monitoring system rather than an event management tool. It does not configure switches, or set port speeds, instead it checks that the device on the network is doing its job.

It is based on the principle of management by exception; it doesn’t overload the user with unnecessary data when the devices on the network are working. Instead it only looks at items that need attention. Mutiny can be set to deliver alarms by e-mail during office hours and by SMS after work. The price of the unit includes delivery, installation and training, which takes place over a single day.
