Resellers using Sharptext’s website can now choose from a much wider range of products with the addition of stock from the distributor’s UK-based sister companies, Gem and Micro P.
Sharptext tends to concentrate on a small range of high profile brands, but the distributor has recognised that resellers want access to a broader range of products. As a result, it has put in place systems to allow resellers in Ireland to see products and availability from fellow DCC Sercom distributors Gem and Micro P.
Sharptext managing director Paul White described the inclusion of Gem and Micro P products as “leveraging the buying power and availability of a huge range of products across the group”, bringing brands such as Canon, Acer, D-Link, Netgear, Sony and Oki to the Irish distributor’s reseller customers.
“They’re not what we refer to as main brands,” White commented. The tie-up with Gem and Micro P allowed Sharptext to focus on managing its main brands and “outsource brand management of group brands. It makes perfect sense from our perspective”.
He was quick to stress that the products would be available only over the website and that Sharptext’s sales force would focus only on the brands signed with the distributor. They would have no visibility of the Gem or Micro P products.
White said part of the reason for making the Gem and Micro P brands available was an expectation from customers that Sharptext would have a broad range of products. In addition, Sharptext provides storefronts for a number of resellers, and they had asked the distributor for a wider range of products.
He said his firm was “absolutely delighted” at the take up of its website, which was contributing around 15% of all orders and close to 10% by revenue.
White’s comments came as Sharptext’s parent company, DCC, revealed a 12% increase in pre-tax profits to €181.7m for the year ended 28 March 2008 on revenues up over 36% at €5.5bn.
