ICS Skills introduces short courses for second level students

Junior Cert classes will from next year have the option of including 100-hour courses as part of a new curriculum developed by ICS Skills.

From September 2013 the new computing curriculum will consist of four modules totalling a minimum of 100 hours class time. Schools are free to implement the curriculum in whatever way they wish, spreading models over a single or several years.

A variety of resources will be available to schools such as workbooks, module guides, teacher training sessions and webinars.

The curriculum will consist of four modules: Computational Thinking; Digital Media; Multimedia Storytelling; and Microcontrollers (eg Raspberry Pi, Arduino and Genie Boards).

ICS Skills CEO Jim Friars said: "Exposure to technology at second level is vital to enable students to make informed choices for further education. Courses like the Computing Curriculum will provide an opportunity to teachers who want to do the best for their students, and provide the chance to open their eyes to the possibilities of a computing career."
