National Data Protection Conference 2016 Review

On behalf of the Irish Computer Society and the Association of Data Protection Officers, we would like to thank everyone who attended our National Data Protection Conference in Ballsbridge on 27 and 28 January. The conference was a fantastic opportunity for the country’s top data protection professionals to discuss important issues in the field of data protection and cybersecurity.

Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner

Helen Dixon, data protection commissioner spoke at the Data Protection Conference 2016

Day 1 comprised of workshops, covering various aspects of data protection law and policy including Subject Access Requests, Data Retention and Destruction, Breach Handling, Audits and more. Day 2 took place in the Aviva Conference Centre, with some outstanding presentations, panels and case studies.

Featured speakers this year included: Helen Dixon, Data Protection Commissioner; Mark Rasdale, A&L Goodbody; Seamus Carroll, Department of Justice and Equality; Damian Griffin, Defence Forces; and Andrea Simmons, i3GRC.

The new EU Data Protection Regulations were a hot topic on the day, in light of their imminent ratification into law. This prompted some interesting discussions on Twitter using the conference hashtag, #dpconf16. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our social media feed over the two days.

If you enjoyed the conference, be sure to stay involved with ICS and keep the conversation going. With cyberthreats becoming more sophisticated and the security of our data becoming harder to maintain, keeping up to date with these trends is essential.

Presentations will be available in the members’ area on www.dpo.ie in due course. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s conference.

DevOps Foundation Certification

Learn all about DevOps as a concept, how to adopt it and how to use it to improve service delivery in your organisation. The DevOps Foundation Certificate is run in conjunction with Daysha Consulting and the DevOps Institute on behalf of the ICS.

DevOps emphasises greater communication, collaboration and integration between operations, quality assurance and development teams. This increases overall efficiency, in stark contrast to the functionally separate ‘silos’ seen in many businesses.

Despite the name, DevOps extends beyond software developers and IT operations professionals. The course is applicable to any and all of the following:

  • Individuals and organizations seeking a foundation level understanding of DevOps
  • Employees and managers responsible for designing, reengineering or improving process
  • Consultants guiding their clients through process improvement initiatives
  • Process stakeholders

With so many organisations adopting a DevOps approach, learning it will enable you to stay ahead of the pack and see tangible results in your day-to-day working environment. The course is delivered over two days. Upon completion of the course objectives, students will sit a one-hour exam consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark for the exam is 65%, leading to the DevOps Foundation Certificate.

To register, please e-mail training@ics.ie

3-Day Data Protection Practitioner – 9 March

On 9 March, ICS will be running its three-day Data Protection Practitioner course in its Dublin and Cork venues. Be confident that your organisation’s policies and procedures are legally compliant with data protection legislation by completing Ireland’s first certified data protection practitioner programme.

The course is ideally suited to anyone who fulfils an information security or data protection role including secretaries, financial workers, project managers, health sector staff, customer support, etc. If you require a highly detailed overview and analysis of what data protection is, this is the best course of its kind. A post-course assessment is held every month at ICS to give students the chance to achieve the Data Protection Practitioner Certificate qualification.

Key learning objectives include:

  • Core data protection principles under the Act
  • Privacy
  • Data Protection Roles (Subject, Processor, Controller)
  • Exceptions from the legislation
  • The role of the Commissioner’s Office
  • Overseas transfer
  • …and many more

The course places an emphasis from the outset on providing relatable, real-world examples to back up any theory delivered during a session. Students are encouraged to provide their own data protection issues that can be openly discussed by the group.

To learn more about the course and to book your place, please visit our ICS events page. Please note that course dates are subject to change.
