Chatbot helps cleaners with language barrier
To help cleaners with their daily work and for colleagues who do not have sufficient command of the Dutch language, Vebego Cleaning Services has developed its own digital AI tool, the ‘Schoonmaak AI-ssistent’.
This is filled with information about the work and about the cleaning company itself, and works as a digital questioning tool that can recognise and translate spoken words in almost all languages thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. The Cleaning AI assistant is an innovation in the cleaning industry.
Vebego Cleaning Services employs 8,000 cleaners, with more than ninety different nationalities. Some of these employees do not have sufficient command of the Dutch language or have difficulty reading texts due to low literacy. For this group, the Schoonmaak AI assistant offers a solution, according to innovation manager, Femy van de Wege. ‘We use such new technology to give colleagues quick answers to questions and give everyone a sense of belonging.’
The Cleaning AI Assistant is a mini-robot that can be easily attached to a cleaning cart. The device recognises in which language a question is asked. Based on all the information and protocols available within Vebego Cleaning Services, an answer is given to the employee in that same language.
Vebego Cleaning Services has conducted a pilot at Schiphol Airport. Based on the experiences there, the company wants to roll out the project further at other clients where colleagues of many different nationalities are at work.
The Cleaning AI Assistant is a collaboration between Vebego Service & Expertise and Young Digital Leaders. In developing the Cleaning AI Assistant, great attention was paid to ensuring employee privacy. Cleaners’ conversations with the chatbot are not stored and ChatGPT is not trained with Vebego Cleaning Services’ input.
