3Com has extended it enterprise-class wireless LAN product family with the addition of the new 3Com 11Mbit/s Wireless LAN PC Card and the addition of the 3Com Wireless LAN Outdoor Bridge Solution.

The Wireless LAN PC Card has five new key features: Autonomous load balancing to select access points with the best bandwidth; XJACK antenna with smart switch to allow power save mode when the antenna is retracted and clear reception when extended; and 802.11d roaming allows the PC Card to receive wireless LAN settings for international and regional communications directly from the access point.

In addition the LAN Manager now provides location detection and automatic activation of wireless LAN profiles preset by the user, as well as automatic activation of a virtual private network (VPN) based on the user location, and 3Link simplifies initiation into multi-participant software applications by finding and displaying potential participants from the local area or ad hoc network without the need for Internet connection.

The 3Com Wireless LAN Outdoor Bridge Solution combines the antennas, antenna cables, Ethernet cable, Power over Ethernet Module and wireless bridge in a weatherproof enclosure that 3Com claims provides complete weather protection. The wireless bridge offers a cost-effective alternative to laying cable by supporting distances of up to 16km at 11Mbit/s, and it can provide connections between temporary locations.

Organisations can set up the wireless bridge in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations covering distances from 300m to 16km. 3Com teamed with MAXRAD, a manufacturer of wireless communications antennas, in developing this rugged new wireless bridge.
