Twitter is introducing a ‘mute’ button that will allow users tthe option to discretely avoid any peers guilty of ‘oversharing’.

Writing in Twitter’s official blog, product manager Paul Rosania said: “We’re beginning to introduce a new account feature called mute to people who use our iPhone and Android apps and Twitter.com. Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user’s content from key parts of your Twitter experience.”

Benefits of the mute button include avoiding someone for certain events that may not be of interest (such as running commentaries on sports event) and sparing friends’ feelings, should they be not that interesting to follow in the virtual world. Muted users will be unaware of their status.

Blocked users will continue to favorite, reply or retweet a user, but the activity will not be visible to the intended recipient, so you can’t be drawn into any unnecessary arguments.
