In early February, IBM will hold its SmartCamp 2012 event in San Francisco. Among the attendees will be Irish company Profitero, which won its place in November of last year at the London SmartCamp event.

"Profitero was selected from more than 80 entries and won due to its outstanding technology, innovative business plan and alignment with IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy," said IBM in November.

The company makes price intelligence software and, as time of publishing, monitors 2,863 web sites and 27,763,773 products and helps retailers maximise profits by analysing online competitive information on thousands of products and dozens of competitors, helping to build smarter retail solutions.

According to IBM, 83% of midmarket CIOs surveyed by IBM have identified analytics, the ability to extract actionable insights from "Big Data," as their top-priority investment area.

The company will receive three months of mentoring from IBM and go on to compete with other SmartCamp winners from around the globe to compete for the title of "IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year."
