Samsung Electronics has reported a significant increase in initial demand for its latest foldable devices, noting that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the two Z Fold 8 variants are expected to surpass all previous pre-order records for the Z series.
According to a Wednesday announcement, the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra have seen a 30% increase in early orders compared to last year. Strikingly, the wider, more compact Fold 8 accounts for almost 50% of these reservations, indicating that the updated design is already resonating with buyers.
Drew Blackard, senior vice president of mobile product management at Samsung Electronics America, expressed his satisfaction with the early success and attributed the momentum to the innovative form factor. He noted that the company is delighted with the continued growth of the foldable-device category.
Although these devices hit the market on 7 August, Samsung is highlighting these figures just before competition breaks out in full force. Apple is expected in September to unveil its first foldable iPhone, which rumour has it will have a form factor similar to the Fold 8.
In addition, the launch of Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold is scheduled for 12 August, although that device will likely have a narrower, taller frame, similar to the Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung has positioned its wider screen as an advantage for users who enjoy reading digital books or consuming media.
Although Samsung has so far held a dominant position in the US market for foldable phones compared to rivals such as Motorola and Google, Apple’s arrival is expected to create a more challenging market environment. However, Apple’s entry could also lift the entire sector to a higher level, since foldable phones currently make up a very small share of the market compared with standard high-end models such as the iPhone 17 Pro Max or the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Internal Samsung data points to a shift in consumer preference towards larger screens; the company found that current Flip users are more than three times as likely to switch to the Fold 8 or Fold 8 Ultra than in previous cycles.
