Oculus has finally confirmed when the Rift virtual reality headset will be released and how much it will cost.

As pre-orders open for the highly anticipated device we know it will be arriving in March for a whopping $599.

Oculus had been backing away from its original claims that the consumer Rift would ship between $200 and $400, but an almost $600 price point makes it a tough sell for anyone who isn’t either a gamer or a habitual early adopter. No wonder Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said there was “no chance” Rift preorders would sell out.

Now we play a waiting game and see whether the HTC Vive or PlayStation VR is more affordable.
