Nokia has finally admitted that rumours were true – it is launching a smaller version of its popular N97 handset.

The news was confirmed during the opening keynote of the mobile giant’s Nokia World show in Stuttgart, hosted by chief executive Olli-Pekkar Kallasvuo and Nokia’s vice president of markets, Annsi Vanjoki.

The handset features a 3.2in touchscreen, with flick scrolling capabilities and new home screen widgets in addition to a full QWERTY keyboard. It is just 1.42cm thick and boasts 8GB of storage, as well as being the first Nokia handset to bear the fruits of a partnership between the company and Facebook dubbed Lifecasting with Ovi.

“It’s meant for those that define status by Facebook. It’s meant for the people who spend most of their day saying ‘I am something’ or ‘What are you doing?’ It’s designed for the digitally minded community,” Vanjoki said.

The N97 Mini will be available from October at an unsubsidised cost of €450, although the company confirmed it will also be free on a range of contracts.
