Meta has confirmed it has removed a combines 750,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts belonging to children under 16 in Australia.

A ban on social media access for young people has been in force in the country on creating and maintaining an account with social networks for that age group since December 2025. Social media is considered a health hazard for them and is therefore banned for the youngest.

Some 462,000 accounts have been removed from Instagram and 294,000 from Facebook.

An estimated 5.1 million children under the age of 16 live in Australia – around 19% of the population.

Other digital domains that are off-limits include Snap, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit and Twitch.

For the time being, the ban appears to be having little effect. Most children still go online every day, often from their own account. This emerges from a first observation of social media use by children, published in The British Medical Journal.
