Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan collected three top awards at this year’s Sentinus Young Innovators Exhibition.

Lauren Murphy received the Intel Sentinus young innovator award for her project, an aid for the rehabilitation of a clenched fist for MS sufferers.

Meibh O’Sullivan and Isabelle Martin took the young scientists overall winner award for their project on the effects of taking photos on memory and forgetfulness.

Loreto Balbriggan’s hat trick was completed by Dr Niamh McNally in the teacher of excellence category.

This years exhibition – the largest science fair held in Northern Ireland – had more than 500 competitors across 150 projects competing in 80 categories.

Alongside the exhibition and competition, attendees were treated to a number of interactive science shows designed to bring science to life.

Projects on display included an Eczema sleep suit to aid sufferers; an app promoting farm safety; a cellular analysis on the effects of garlic extract on cancer cell growth; a self-build electric car; and a mathematical analysis of winning number patterns in the National Lottery draws.

The annual event is organised by Sentinus, an educational charity working with over 60,000 young people a year in Northern Ireland to promote STEM subjects.

Bill Connor, chief executive, Sentinus, said: “This event is a centrepiece of our ongoing work to encourage more young people here to pursue these subjects, with a view to developing the necessary skills to underpin for our future economic success. As always we were very pleased with the both the quantity and quality of the work on show, much of which has been developed to address real world problems in conjunction with many of our private sector supporters.

“The addition of the engaging science shows also captured the imagination of attendees ensuring everyone will have left better informed and more enthused about the importance of STEM.”
