Engineers Ireland has highlighted the critical role that Ireland’s engineers will play in ensuring Ireland’s future economic success. Speaking at the announcement of the short listed nominees for the ‘Engineers Ireland Innovation Awards 2009′, Dr. Chris Horn (pictured), president of Engineers Ireland, underlined the importance of Ireland becoming a genuine home-grown innovation economy for the global market if we are to return to a period of positive economic growth.
Highlighting the need to recognise and invest in the people that will be at the heart of that economy, Dr. Horn said, “There is now growing recognition that innovation is the engine that will power our economic recovery. But while the enormous contribution of foreign direct investment to Ireland must be acknowledged, it is supporting an innovative mindset across indigenous business, the multi nationals operating here and education that must be our highest national priority.”
The awards will feature projects boasting such industry partners as Fulitsu Siems and the Dublin Airport Authority. “We are very proud to support the Engineers Ireland Innovation Awards,” said Jack Mac Gowan, commercial director, Dublin Airport Authority. “Events like this inspire the next generation of engineers and business leaders, and will allow Irish students – and indeed established engineers – to showcase their talent, ability and prowess. At the DAA we are hoping that at least some of these ideas could potentially provide opportunities that could be deployed and integrated into the future plans for Dublin Airport City.”
The Engineers Ireland Innovation Awards will take place in Engineers Ireland HQ, Clyde Road, Dublin 2 today.
