It’s just over four years since Cohort Technology launched on the UK market. The distributor started life barely four months after managing director Grahame Smee had ended his stint at distributor equip, in the wake of its acquisition by Horizon Technology Group. Smee, who founded equIP, was joined by Ian Gilbey, former services director at the distributor. The men have a history as colleagues back in the late 1990s at Data Connectivity, Datrontech’s networking arm.

Cohort was first launched to focus on helping emerging vendors break into the UK market, predominantly in the areas of IP voice, high-end security and high-end storage. Cohort started with ShoreTel the provider of Unified Communications (UC) solutions as one of its first vendors. Not long after, the distributor launched a Network Access Control managed service for resellers, based on Forescout technology and went on to add Stonesoft, MXI, Ironkey and PGP to its vendor roster. In September of last year, the technology distributor opened an Irish operation based in Dublin. The UK channel magazine CRN reported that Cohort had already been successful in some partner recruitment in Ireland and felt the time was right to show its commitment with a local presence. Smee commented that, “we believe that we will be offering a new level of value add to this territory,” Smee citied Cohort’s pre and post sales services, NAC and onsite training as evidence.
