Microsoft has announced the release date for its next generation Xbox One console. The console will retail in 13 countries to start with further markets to follow in 2014.

The announcement gives the Xbox One a full week on the shelves before its competitor, Sony’s PlayStation 4, arrives.

Pre-orders for the console, priced at €499 began in August and Microsoft has already said demand outweighed supply although it would not be drawn on how many units that represents.

The Xbox One has had a mixed reception. In June Microsoft rolled back on plans to change the console’s that digital rights management features that would have restricted the sale of second hand games. Similarly Microsoft clarified that the console would operate as normal without an Internet connection or the Kinect motion-sensitive peripheral.
