Fujitsu has launched a service to help firms understand how their existing processes and supporting applications function, using visual tools that shows process flows.
The new service, called Business Process Discovery, helps firms understand how their processes and supporting applications work. It then identifies steps that are not adding value or which are adding disproportionate costs.
It also highlights exposure to compliance failure, fraud and other legal and efficiency issues lying hidden in a company’s operational workflows.
Fujitsu says the service will make organisations more efficient.
Traditional process discovery methods gather information by talking to operational staff about how they believe the process works. This may at best give a genuine but subjective view.
Fujitsu says Business Process Discovery is different because of its evidence-based approach. It involves taking real data produced by the applications supporting the business processes. This ‘evidence’ is then fed into a tool to enable the reconstruction of current processes, converting interaction data into valuable visual information.
It helps firms to rapidly obtain detailed current process diagrams showing what is happening. Fujitsu says this evidence-based approach, rather than a purely consultative method, takes weeks instead of months to gather the information, and is more accurate.
The service has been piloted with a number of Fujitsu customers in the utility and financial services sectors and has made substantial cost savings.
An early convert was Spanish bank BBVA, which used the service to assess its loan provisioning process.
George Spyridakis, senior consultant for operational excellence at Fujitsu UK and Ireland, said BBVA used Fujitsu visualisation tools to interrogate historical evidence to provide a detailed and accurate map for improvement.
“Our consultants were then excellently placed to apply their expertise and to make informed recommendations based on the evidence provided. As organisations continue to look for efficiency and cost savings in light of the worsening global economy we think that Business Process Discovery is an invaluable service.”
Fujitsu is offering the service as part of its suite of application and consulting services.
