Three Irish students have been selected as regional finalists for the Google Science Fair at an event yesterday in London.

The successful finalists were: Claire Gregg (13) from Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin for her project on using agent-based modelling to analyse Ebola outbreaks; Louis Madden (16) from St Macartan’s College, Monaghan for his work on developing more efficient and cheaper ways to conduct genetic testing and DNA research; and Rose Anne O’Mahony (16) from Christ King Girls’ Secondary School in Cork, for her project looking at food production patterns, climate change and the need for carbon dioxide stability.

The 90 regional finalists will be whittled down to 20 international finalists at an event in Austin, Texas on 4 August.

The winners will be announced at the fifth Google Science Gala on 21 September at Google’s head office in Mountain View, California.

Last year’s overall winners were Ciara Judge, Emer Hickey and Sophie Healy-Thow from Kinsale Community College in Cork for their project on using natural bacteria to aid food production.
