Transition year students at St Aloysius College, Carrigtwohill in Cork received their certificates for successfully completing the Sage@School programme at a ceremony on 24 May. The initiative gives TY students the opportunity to train in Sage Accounts Software, Sage@School, thus helping them prepare for the world of work.
The programme is designed to foster entrepreneurship, increases employability and enhances the use of ICT in business education, by giving students the opportunity to use and become certified in a commercially available accounting package.
The course is split into separate components, a first module for teacher then a second students once their teacher has become a certified trainer.
The student course is completed in approximately 12 hours. It is designed to provide an insight into computerised accounts, business studies and basic accounting principles. The students receive practice CDs and programme manuals and complete an online exam to give them the most sought after accounts certification in the market.
Vicki Manley, a business teacher from St Aloysius College, completed the one-day teacher training course in February, said: "In my opinion, the Sage@School programme has changed the students’ perception of accounting, as well as allowing them to learn a new skill. The students have also earned a recognised qualification, which is so important, particularly in these times. Many of the students who have completed Sage are now considering accounting as a Leaving Cert subject, which really proves how successful the programme is and how tailored it is in its approach to students of this age."
