Irish company Pixalert which has launched a new parental control program to protect children from downloaded pornographic images, has had its program Safescreen classified as trackware by security company Symantec.

Trackware is defined as malware, which when downloaded on a PC reports to a third party on the activities that take place on that computer.

John Nolan, chief executive at Pixalert denies that Safescreen has any such reporting functionality and has registered a complaint with Symantec in both Ireland and in the US. So far, although Safescreen has been taken off Symantec’s blacklist, home users with Norton Antivirus installed, will get an alert if they attempt to download a trial of Safescreen from Pixalert’s website.

Nolan feels that although Norton will allow the user to continue and install the trial, most home users would be panicked by the warning it is defined as trackware and abort the download.

This results in a lost sale for Pixalert. Pixalert is still looking for a resolution to this unsatisfactory situation and has ruled out legal action as a course of action.
