A Chinese developer of military-grade solid state storage and controllers, Waitan, has brought to market what it claims is the world’s first remote erase and self-destruct solid state drive (SSD) range, called StellaHunter.

The company said that the immediate application would be unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and other unmanned systems.

The devices are described as rugged SSDs, based on the maker’s proprietary military grade NAND flash management algorithms and ASICs, which also feature AES-256 bit hardware based on-the-fly encryption, on-the-board UPS, and ATA command based military secure erase methods. Capacities are 4TB in 2.5″ SATA III (6.0 Gbps) form factors.

“We believe the remote controlled secure erase and self-destruction functions are highly valuable for UAV, drone, and other remote controlled and unmanned systems where data on the systems’ hard drives is confidential, which needs to be destroyed from afar during accidents or emergency scenarios”, said James Zheng, CTO, Waitan.

Based on users’ application scenarios and available in different capacities, said Waitan, the remote controlled secure erase and self-destruction function can be executed via satellite communications, cellular communications, Wi-Fi, or combinations of two or more of these methods. Users can opt to pre-set an SSD drive to be reusable after secure erase, or to be permanently destroyed after self-destruction.

The makers say that the StellaHunter product family is designed for military, defence and aerospace applications which require high security, high reliability, ruggedness, and endurance. The applications would include UAVs and other unmanned systems such as ground, sea or submarine vehicles, military applications, aerospace and aviation computers, rugged computing, industrial/embedded PCs, disaster recovery, public security, government systems, fault tolerant applications, and remotely operated outdoor and indoor stations for various types of applications.

Pricing was not made known at time of writing, but the StellaHunter range is currently available.
