Tom Brazil, Professor of Electronic Engineering at UCD and principal investigator at the Science Foundation Ireland-backed Connect Centre for Future Networks, has been elected president of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S).

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) is the world’s largest association of technical professionals, with more than 400,000 members from around the globe and is dedicated to promoting technological innovation and excellence.

The MTT-Society promotes the theory and applications of RF, microwave, millimetre-wave and terahertz technologies. These are fundamental to all radio-based communication systems such as mobile phones as well as being used in satellites and radar.

Prof Brazil is joint head of UCD’s RF & Microwave Research Group, an internationally renowned centre of research for high frequency engineering, specialising in the modelling, design and linearisation of high power amplifiers. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2003 and elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in 2004.

Dr Ruth Freeman, director of strategy & communication at Science Foundation Ireland, said: “This is a richly deserved honour for Professor Brazil. His research work on wireless communications is particularly significant for Internet of Things innovation. The Internet of Things will play a large role in our daily lives in the years ahead. This achievement demonstrates that Ireland is a world leader in scientific research.”

Prof Brazil will serve as President-Elect in 2017 before taking office in 2018.
