Napster reborn

Life

Roxio certainly hopes so: The company has just launched Napster 2.0, a legal, fee-based version of the original song swapping site, which was shut down by the courts in 2001. Napster 2.0 offers downloadable songs for $1 each and albums for $10; subscribers will also need to pay a monthly fee of $10.

This follows the successful model used by Apple’s iTunes service, which is now available for Windows PCs as well as for Macs. In its first week of trading, Roxio claimed that over 300,000 songs were purchased from Napster.

Apple claims that in that same period, Apple managed to sell over 1.5 million songs through its iTunes service.
