Irish DVD rental service Moviestar.ie has struck a deal with distributors that will pave the way for a download service with an expected launch date in May. The service is the first of its kind in Ireland. Following a deal with Network Television Ireland the website will begin offering downloadable content at an initial price of 99c. Rentals will automatically expire after a month.
While the latest Hollywood films will not be part of the service at launch it is anticipated more content partners will come on board to broaden the range of content available.
Moviestar.ie currently has 28,000 subscribers with a turnover of €1.2 million. The company aims to increase its user base to 40,000 over the coming year.
