Mozilla has started rolling out a built-in ad blocker for Firefox on iOS. This allows users to block adverts, trackers, pop-ups and other intrusive elements without having to install a separate browser extension.
The new feature is currently being tested and should make browsing on iPhone and iPad a lot calmer. In particular, websites that use many adverts and tracking techniques can be displayed significantly cleaner as a result.
An important advantage is that the blocking is integrated directly into Firefox. This makes users less dependent on external content blockers and means they do not have to manage separate configurations.
The move is striking because ad blocking on iOS works differently from desktop due to the limitations of the platform. Firefox for iOS uses the web technologies imposed by Apple, which gives Mozilla less freedom than on, for example, Windows, macOS or Linux.
With the built-in blocking, Mozilla is nevertheless trying to make Firefox on iOS more attractive to users who value privacy and an ad-free browsing experience.
The feature is being made available gradually. It may therefore take some time before all Firefox users on iOS can use the new ad blocker.
