Visitors to Dublin’s St. Stephen’s Green tomorrow will be challenged by games, puzzles and teasers, as part of Maths Week.
Taking place from 12-20 October, Maths Week and is an all-island annual festival for the promotion of maths in everyday life.
Already over 83,000 pupils have registered through their schools to take part in special maths week activities and many events are already booked out.
Highlights during the week include a talk Prof Keith Devlin of Standford University on the relationship between maths and gaming; Bubblz the mathematical clown will visit Waterford and Cork; and Doug Buchanan will bring his puzzle workshop to Sligo; Katie Steckles will visit Dundalk; and Steve Humble will give an outreach lecture in Limerick.
Eoin Gill, Maths Week Ireland co-ordinator, said: "Maths Week is all about promoting a positive image of Maths. We really hope that people of all ages will take part in Maths Week events, or even just have a go at some of our teasers and puzzles. What we’re trying to show is that maths is important to everyone and everyone can improve their maths skills.
"Maths in the City tomorrow will show people that maths can be fun and entertaining, changing people’s perceptions of the subject. Many people think that you have to be hardwired for maths, but that’s simply not the case. Of course, not everyone will become a top mathematician but everyone can learn to enjoy maths if we can break that ‘cycle of fear’ associated with the subject.
"This is important for our economic development but it’s also a critical societal issue because maths is a vital life skill."
