Jobs marks triumphant return with new iTunes, iPods

Steve Jobs made his first re-appearance as CEO of Apple with the launch of the latest version of iTunes and a new range of iPod media players.

Speaking at an event in San Francisco Jobs unveiled iTunes 9, the latest version of the media player and store, featuring improved syncing with iPods, local application management and an expansion of Genius playlist functionalist.

Launched as part of the package, iTunes LPs will encourage legal digital downloads by including expanded visual features like live performance videos, lyrics, artwork, liner notes, interviews, photos, album credits and more. Initial releases include Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited, Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.

Also introduced, the new iPod nano, adds a video camera, microphone, speaker and a video camera. Also featured are a 2.2″ colour display and in a polished aluminium and glass enclosure, 8Gb of memory and an FM radio. It will come in nine brilliant colours including silver, black, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow and pink.

Also launched was the new iPod Shuffle, the smallest yet in the series, capable of storing up to 1,000 songs. In the absence of a screen display the new player can tell the user what songs are playing and can shuffle material by shaking it.
