Even a sophisticated and leading advertising agency can be a small company and Javelin Young & Rubicam has a team of just 20 and a network of 12 PCs plus the Macs that the creative side of the house use.
‘We certainly have no in-house IT person,’ says Orla Kelly. ‘In fact we haven’t even got an advanced user really, which is why we have outsourced everything to do with setting up, upgrading and troubleshooting our machines and the network.’ Now on the client handling side, Orla Kelly was the office manager and by default, responsible for the computers when Datapac was retained two years ago to take over responsibility for minding all aspects of the company’s systems. ‘Since then it has been our IT resource.’
That includes the all-important Internet access and e-mail via an ISDN 128Mbit connection as well as the network and servers, half a dozen printers and scanners and other peripherals. Datapac is always on call for urgent problems, although there have been very few, and telephone support is available for any user who needs assistance. It is also the primary source of advice on upgrading or replacement as the needs of the business evolve.
