The Áit Eile (Another Place) Internet portal pilot project is an online network for sick children that lets bed-bound patients communicate with each other via e-mail, live chat and video conferencing over a secure Internet connection. Run by the Centre for Health Informatics in TCD and funded by the Information Society Commission through the Department of Health and Children, it will also allow access to relevant child-friendly medical information that will enable them to find out more about their illnesses and locate other children with similar conditions.
When complete, the project will link up six hospitals in Ireland – the National Children’s Hospital in Tallaght, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Cork University Hospital, Temple Street Children’s Hospital, The National Rehabilitation Hospital and Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospital. It is planned to fully kit out each of the hospital’s classrooms, where children and teenage patients can use computer equipment to keep up with their studies and the progress of their schoolmates back home.
