Engineers Ireland has selected the Galway Education Centre as the recipient of its annual Science, Engineering & Technology Award. The prize recognises the outstanding contribution by an individual or organisation in raising public awareness of the importance of science, engineering and technology, and the promotion of careers in the sector. Professor Jim Browne (pictured), President-elect of Engineers Ireland, presented the award to Bernard Kirk, director of the Galway Education Centre at the second annual Science, Engineering Communications & Outreach conference in Dublin.
Commenting at the award ceremony, Professor Jim Browne, president-elect of Engineers Ireland, said, “If Ireland is to become a top 5 global economy by 2020, the country needs to have a year on year increase of 7% in the number of engineering graduates. The continued promotion of engineering and science to our primary and post primary school students is crucial to increase the uptake of Engineering at third level.”
ccepting the award, Bernard Kirk, said, “We are delighted to receive the Science, Engineering and Technology Awareness Award from Engineers Ireland. We have been working closely with a very wide range of organisations from the education, industrial and scientific sectors in the west of Ireland for a long number of years, in order to spread the word about the importance of science and engineering to the future of the region and the country. This award means a lot to the Centre and to Galway and it provides us and our partners in science, engineering and technology education in Galway with the encouragement to continue with our efforts.”
Founded in 1973, the Galway Education Centre has been involved at every level of education in the west of Ireland. The Centre has supported a number of science, engineering and technology projects in the west of Ireland over the last number of years including the Galway Science & Technology Festival which in the past 10 years has involved over 250,000 participants and many more initiatives involving local engineering industries and organisations.
In recent years the Galway Education Centre has also been awarded responsibility for the T4 programme. This includes the national rollout of the revised syllabuses for Architectural Technology, Design and Communication Graphics and Engineering Technology at post primary level, as well as the new subject Technology at Leaving Certificate level. The introduction of the T4 programme is vitally important to encourage students to explore the world of engineering and science in senior cycle.
