Security specialist Espion is to build a new cyber-lab to support its portfolio of security services for critical infrastructure and eDiscovery and Digital Forensics divisions.

In the era of cybercrime and cyberwar, the company said, addressing the security of industrial systems known as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), is paramount, as they protect a range of infrastructure such as power stations, airports, traffic management through to oil and gas pipelines.

The new purpose-built Cyber Lab, will enable Espion’s R&D team, comprising developers, software engineers and SCADA security consultants, to safeguard components of industrial control systems and SCADA Smart Meters as well as other types of critical infrastructure equipment before they are deployed.

The lab will employ tools used in industrial automation such as Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) devices and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and will facilitate the expert team to conduct a wide range of research including pen testing SCADA networks as well as vulnerability and exploitation analysis of Modbus control systems.  The Lab will, says Espion, enable the development of SCADA/process automation system security (IT/OT convergence), threat intelligence and the observation of the potential consequences of simulated cyberattacks.

“The increasing risk of cyberattacks in the industry control systems domain coupled with their inherent legacy of security flaws makes them incredibly vulnerable,” said Mark Carolan, head of R&D, Espion. “Our cutting-edge Lab will allow us to leverage our heavyweight security credentials to address wide-ranging risks such as advanced persistent threats (APT), viruses, malware, opportunistic hacking, and direct hacking attacks from criminals or state nations.”

“Business sustainability is a core value at Espion and we have consistently invested in in our people, infrastructure and technology.  We believe this Lab will support us to develop and grow successfully as a company because it adds a new dimension to our SCADA offering.”
