Western European organisations are buying unified threat management (UTM) appliances due to their ease of deployment and advanced security features, according to new figures from IDC.

The analyst’s Europe, Middle East and Africa Quarterly Security Appliance Tracker reports that despite the EMEA security appliance market reaching $781.07 million (€696 million), this is in fact a moderate decline of 2.2% year-on-year. However, amid the flat results, UTM sales appear to be a bright spot as the only product category that increased in value in Q1 2015, expanding +10.7% year-on-year, and likely to gradually grow to about 57% of total security appliance sales by 2019.

The reason for this, according to IDC, is their relative ease of deployment and their security features.

“UTM solutions have always been the preferred way of delivering security for organisations in Europe, due to their ease of deployment and the advanced security functions that they offer in a threat environment that is evolving faster than ever,” said Romain Fouchereau, manager, security appliance research, IDC.
