Version 6.0 of Iona’s Orbix E2A Application Server Platform (ASP) is an enterprise deployment infrastructure for distributed Web services, Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and CORBA applications. Orbix E2A ASP 6.0 lets organisations use their existing operating platforms, programming language expertise, and legacy application investments when building new, large-scale integrated business applications that support reduced costs, increased efficiency, and greater business flexibility.

According to Iona, version 6.0 is specifically suited for organisations whose IT assets include mission-critical applications built on diverse architectures such as CORBA and IBM’s OS390/zOS. These systems historically have operated in isolation from front-office business applications. Orbix E2A works around application and middleware compatibility issues by providing a service-oriented deployment infrastructure that makes Web services, J2EE, CORBA, Microsoft .NET and OS390/zOS mainframe environments transparently interoperable.

Orbix E2A combines the Orbix E2A XMLBus Web services technology and a scalable J2EE 1.3 compliant application server, to deliver a set of tools for building and integrating applications as services. Expanded deployment features include a security framework, transparent asynchronous messaging middleware switching, and a single point of management and control of mixed technology applications. These ensure that such services are accessible, interoperable and manageable.

Another new feature is the IONA Security Service which adds a layer of abstraction to an organisation’s existing security infrastructure. This enables authorisation and authentication across CORBA, J2EE, Web services and mainframe technology domains.

In addition, IIOP Firewall Proxy lets IIOP-based CORBA or J2EE messages traverse firewalls securely. Support for cryptographic hardware devices lets Orbix E2A Application Server 6.0 applications obtain user credentials from a SmartCard or similar device.
