ComReg paves the way for VoIP

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) is to help to promote the growth of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in Ireland by creating a new 076 number prefix for VoIP users.

VoIP is a technology that allows users to make and receive calls over the Internet rather than the traditional public telephone networks — this can result in significant savings in regard to call costs.

As well as creating an access code that will facilitate the introduction of new services, ComReg also intends to allow operators of VoIP services access to geographic numbers such as 01 for Dublin. In addition, services such as Freephone and Lo-call will be available through VoIP.

ComReg has issued a brief guide to Voice over Internet Protocol, which can be found at the regulators website www.comreg.ie
