Apple unveils new iMac range

Apple has refreshed its iMac line of desktop computers with next generation quad-core processors, new graphics, Thunderbolt I/O technology for fast data transfer, and FaceTime video calling.

The new iMac features quad-core Intel Core i5 processors, with an option for customers to choose Core i7 processors up to 3.4GHz. These next generation processors feature an integrated memory controller and an AMD Radeon graphics card for graphics-intensive tasks like video editing.

The new iMacs are the first desktop computers on the market to include Thunderbolt technology – a potential copmetitor for USB 3.0 and Firewire, capable of data transfers up to 10Gb/s. The 21.5″ model has a single Thunderbolt port, while the 27″ model has two.

Thunderbolt is compatible with FireWire and USB consumer devices, and Gigabit Ethernet networks via adapters. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA displays.

Also new to the range is Apple’s video calling app, FaceTime, and a high definition camera. The iMac continues to feature its signature aluminum and glass design, IPS LED-backlit display, SD card slot and comes with a choice of Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

The iMac meets Energy Star 5.2 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold rating, with mercury-free displays and made with arsenic-free glass.

As with Macbook and Macbook Pro lines, the iMacs come with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife and access to the Mac App Store.

The 21.5″ iMac is available as a 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 500Gb hard drive for a suggested retail price of €1,149; and a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 model with AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1Tb hard drive for a suggested retail price of €1,449.

The 27″ iMac is available as a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1Tb hard drive for a suggested retail price of €1649; and one with a 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 model with AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics,and 1Tb hard drive for a suggested retail price of €1,899.
