Apple considers integrating AI models from other companies into Siri
Apple is exploring the possibility of integrating third party AI models into its voice assistant Siri. Reportedly, the tech giant has started talks with Anthropic and OpenAI, asking them to develop customised versions of their AI models for testing on Apple’s cloud infrastructure.
At present, most of Apple’s AI features are based on self-developed models. The plan was to use this technology for a revamped version of Siri, expected to launch in 2026.
Apple still uses its own technology for Siri, even though OpenAI’s ChatGPT now assists with Web searches. By integrating third party AI models, Apple could expand Siri with features similar to those of Android assistants, helping to close the competitive gap.
The news follows a series of delays and setbacks in efforts to improve Siri with AI capabilities. Originally, the enhanced version of Siri was planned for autumn 2024, but ran into technical roadblocks, leading to a complete rebuild and changes in management responsibilities within Apple. The launch date was then pushed to spring 2025 and later to 2026.
Reports indicate that Apple has encountered bugs while developing its own large language models for Siri, highlighting the complexity of the undertaking. These issues have contributed to a decline in Apple’s share price, underscoring the significant hurdles the company faces in advancing its AI ambitions.
