Apple announced new versions of iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS and MacOS (Golden Gate) at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) yesterday. As expected, no major changes were made in favour of focusing on performance and stability. After several years in which major new features and radical design changes took centre stage, the company is now concentrating on improving the overall user experience.

Apple engineers are working on removing inefficient code, fixing bugs and optimising system performance.

Apple regards iOS 27 as a kind of ‘reset’, comparable to earlier updates that were less about eye-catching new features and more about refining the existing system. As a result, users should experience faster app launch times, smoother animations and a more responsive interface. Older supported iPhones should also benefit from these optimisations.

During WWDC 2026, Apple announced a refined version of the Liquid Glass interface in iOS 27. The most striking addition is a new slider that lets users determine for themselves how transparent or, on the contrary, how opaque the interface appears.

With this new setting, users can precisely choose between a clearer, glass-like look and a more tinted, less transparent appearance. With this, Apple seems to be responding to feedback from users who sometimes found the original Liquid Glass design too busy or hard to read.

Instead of completely replacing the Liquid Glass design, Apple has therefore opted to enable more personalisation. Users are given more control over how the system looks, so they can find the balance between aesthetics and legibility that best suits their preferences.

Parental controls

Apple is giving parents more and simpler options to determine what their children can do on Apple devices. These parental controls will now work across all Apple platforms. Parents were already able to approve which apps their children were allowed to download, but that control is now being extended to websites. Children can request permission to visit specific websites or to make certain purchases.

Stricter rules will also apply to iMessage. Children can only get in touch with new people after their parents have given permission. In addition, new settings must ensure that videos with nudity or violent content are better shielded, unless parents explicitly give permission to view this content.

Siri

During WWDC 2026, Apple announced a completely revamped version of Siri (AI), with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and more natural interactions. The new Siri is designed to better understand conversations, retain context and carry out more complex tasks than before.

One of the biggest changes is the integration of advanced AI models within Apple Intelligence. This allows Siri to hold longer conversations without constantly losing context and enables the assistant to respond better to follow-up questions. Siri also has a better understanding of what is happening on the screen, so you can, for example, refer to information that is currently visible and have Siri act on it.

In addition, Siri is gaining more extensive capabilities to control apps and perform multiple actions in succession. This makes it easier to handle tasks such as organising appointments, sending messages or managing files with a single command.

Apple emphasises that privacy remains an important part of the new Siri. Wherever possible, requests are processed locally on the device, while more complex AI features make use of Apple’s secure cloud infrastructure.
