The iPhone 5 launch may be Apple’s big story of the day but an embarrassing service outage has taken the gloss off the big event. IN a first for Apple’s iCloud service, some users of the iCloud e-mail service have been unable to access their e-mail for a time yestrerday.

An update posted to Apple’s iCloud system status page after 3pm Pacific Time (11pm GMT) Tuesday confirmed that some users "may be unable to access iCloud mail." The outage affected around 1.1% of subscribers according to Apple, which promised to restore services as soon as possible. Another update was promised by 5pm PT.

That’s likely to be of small comfort to the users affected by the outage, many of whom took to Twitter to voice their complaints. Some users reported that mail had been unavailable since early Tuesday morning.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment further on the outage, referring news website Macworld to the company’s system status update.
