Wicklow based company, Ropas Safety Limited has launched a new innovative device called “Speed Nanny”. The device uses the latest global positioning technology to keep drivers alert to dangers on the road ahead. Satellite positioning combined with intelligent software gives drivers critical safety information when they need it most; when approaching accident risk locations such as dangerous junctions, bends, schools and pedestrian risk zones as identified by the Irish Road Safety Authority.
A first in Europe, Speed Nanny provides drivers with audible alerts to very real risks on the road ahead. Until now drivers rely almost exclusively on their visual sense to avoid accidents and to keep within the speed limits. Irish roads are busy and people’s minds even busier so it is easy to miss an important speed sign or a dangerous junction when driving and find yourself in a collision or with two points on your license.
Sean Breen, Managing Director, Ropas Limited and creator of Speed Nanny: “Busy roads and even busier minds lead to greater risks for drivers, Speed Nanny uses proven technology to give you advance warning of accident risk locations, helping to keep you safe, point free and focused on the road ahead.”
Adrian Taheny, Director, FBD Insurance, used Speed Nanny for over 2000 kilometres during the 2007 FBD Insurance Race and commented: “Speed Nanny is an intelligent and un-obtrusive driver companion and certainly made me more aware of the dangers on the road ahead. I am sure that drivers who use Speed Nanny and act on its warnings will drive more safely.”
According to statistics from the beginning of 2006 almost 1.7 million private cars and nearly 300,000 goods vehicles use our roads, giving some idea for the potential market for Speed Nanny. Ropas Safety hopes to encourage as many drivers as possible to take on the product to help reduce the risks for all road users.
