Lolcats and babies have been staples of clip culture for the last few years, but 2011 was the year of the dog, according to YouTube. In a serious report issued today by search giant Google Ultimate Dog Tease, where a family pet lip syncs to a piece of anxious conversation, was the most-watched community video of 2011.

Three of top five entries in the same category were taken by acts associated with RTE’s Republic of Telly series. In second and third places were Damo & Ivor: Hangovers and The Rubberbandits’ Irish language version of their song I wanna fight your father respectively. Comedy band Dead Cat Bounce’s Rugby rounded out the top five.

Elsewhere Rebecca Black’s popular-for-all-the-wrong-reasons Friday was the most viewed clip globally, and romantics everywhere were impressed by the Greatest Marriage Proposal Ever.
