The French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Madame Emanuelle d’Achon was on hand to present scholarships to two UCD postgraduate students to further their research on energy effeciency. The awards were given under the aegis of the Ireland Fund of France Research Scholarship, a combined initiative of UCD’s Master of Engineering Programme and the Ireland Fund of France sponsored by environmental services group Veolia Environnement.

The winners, Donal Costello and Olivier Neu will continue their studies in the new term.

Liam Connellan, chairman of the Veolia Environment group in Ireland, said: “This type of scholarship programme enables companies to tap into the next generation of emerging engineering talent. The proposed projects clearly demonstrate that UCD graduate engineering students are passionate about understanding the nature of future energy generation, supply and consumption.”

Costello’s research project, Energy Saving Opportunities within the Dairy Sector, will explore the new developments in technology which can bring about reduced energy consumption for this major manufacturing activity. Neu will focus his research on efficient heating in public transport.

The research projects will be undertaken with the support of Veolia’s transport division, Veolia Transport, operators of LUAS and Dalkia, Veolia’s energy and utilities management company.
