Trump no longer considers AI company Anthropic a security risk
US President Donald Trump has revised his position on Anthropic, stating in a conversation with news website Axios that he no longer considers the AI company a threat to national security.
This marks a significant reversal from earlier this year, when the US government officially designated the company as a security risk, a move that prompted Anthropic to take legal action.
The president admitted that he might still have had those concerns a week ago, but that his opinion has since changed. He spoke in glowing terms about CEO Dario Amodei, describing him as an intelligent and likeable leader.
Trump also praised the speed with which the company had restricted the global release of the Fable 5 model following a request from the administration. He stressed that releasing such a model entailed a serious liability risk, noting that the consequences could include imprisonment, and that Amodei had handled the situation with commendable responsibility.
In response, a representative of Anthropic expressed appreciation for the administration’s efforts to resolve the issue quickly. The company reiterated its commitment to working with the government to secure vital infrastructure and maintain US leadership in the AI sector.
The relationship between the two parties had already been under strain for several months. A legal dispute is still ongoing regarding the original security-risk classification, which, according to Anthropic, was a punitive measure by the Department of Defense after the company had refused specific cooperation terms. A court has already issued a preliminary injunction blocking that designation, pointing to a strong likelihood that the government’s actions were unlawful.
