Tesla has big plans to take its Optimus robot into the mainstream

25 March 2025

Tesla plans to produce 5,000 human-like Optimus robots by the end of 2025. The ambitious target was announced by CEO Elon Musk in a live broadcast of an internal employee meeting.

The first production line will be the size of a Roman legion, the entrepreneur explained, saying Tesla could produce up to 12,000 robots but would be satisfied with 5,000. Musk stressed that the product is a completely new development because everything about it is new. Even half of the planned production would be considered a significant achievement.

The Tesla CEO described the Optimus robot as “probably the best product of all time”. The robot has been in development since 2021. An actor initially embodied it before Tesla presented a prototype the following year.

Between revolutionising the perception of electric vehicles, commercialising space travel and delivering broadband across the world via his own satellite network Musk has form in delivering on massive projects and attractive products. Next year will see the rollout of robotaxis – aka Cybercabs – that you can hail from the side of the road instead of having to order by app.

Unlike these projects the Optimus presents a problem: what does the average person do with one? IN other words, are these the droids we’re looking for?
