Smile! We’re celebrating 25 years

Trade

1 October 2007

The emoticon, known and loved or despised by millions of users of Windows Live Messenger, has marked its 25th birthday. To honour the occasion Microsoft is offering 30 free new emoticons to WLM users.

The emoticon, which began as a simple smiley face created with punctuation marks, was added to Microsoft’s chat service in 1982.

Brian Kealy, marketing manager for Windows Live Services Ireland, said: “The ubiquitous smiley face is part of daily life to over 270 million world-wide, and you can understand why: they quickly and simply enable users to express a range of emotions, from laughter to confusion and anger to surprise. Hungry instant messengers can even send a fork and knife emoticon.”
