Russia develops satellite Internet to compete with Starlink
In order to modernise its space programme and challenge established players like the United States, Russia is developing a satellite Internet system.
Dmitry Bakanov, head of Roscosmos, acknowledged the success of Elon Musk and Starlink, which has deployed more than 8,000 satellites, but still wants Russia to establish itself in the satellite Internet market as well.
The project is led by Bureau 1440 and focuses on developing a low-Earth orbit satellite system that can provide high-speed Internet access worldwide. The goal is to revive Russia’s leadership in space exploration and help the country regain a foothold in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
The initial testing phases of the system have yielded promising results, indicating rapid progress toward large-scale deployment.
