Ringing in the changes

Mobile phone subscribers will soon be able to keep their existing mobile number even if they change operator, under a new ruling from the telecoms regulator ComReg.

Currently, Mobile phone users lose their number if they switch from one operator to another. However, the regulator has now taken steps to make Mobile Number Portability (MNP) a reality by July 2003.

The introduction of MNP is likely to have a serious impact on consumer behaviour in the mobile market and will mean that subscribers will no longer have to incur extra costs simply because they wish to change operator.
